ABOUT OUR PASTOR
As the son of a community activist and Methodist minister, Pastor Christopher Waters built his ministry on social justice activism and the social gospel of Jesus Christ.  As the Pastor of Thankful Baptist Church in Augusta, Georgia, Pastor Waters has spent the last 10 years practicing and preaching Liberation Theology to counter the spiritual, psychological, and socio-economic oppression faced by our inner-city congregation and community.

He has boldly called attention to the problem of underfunded public schools, mass incarceration, and senseless gun violence in our city. He served as Director of Student Retention and community partnership at the Richmond County, Lamar Alternative Education School, led marches, and rallies to end senseless gun violence in our city, and coordinated local voter drives during the 2016 and 2018 Georgia elections.

In 2012, Pastor Waters led Historic Thankful to partner with local elementary schools, with their “Read to Succeed” program, to allow retired church members to read to elementary students to promote reading and academic achievement. On March 8th, 2018 Pastor Waters was recognized for his social outreach as he received the Charles S. Hamilton Social Action Award from the New Era Missionary Baptist Convention of Georgia, Inc. at their Adjourned Meeting Session.

On November 14th, 2018 Pastor Waters was elected as the new Deputy Secretary for the Southern Region of the New Era Missionary Baptist Convention of Georgia, Inc. He also serves as Director of Public Relations for the Martin Luther King Jr. Observance Committee of Augusta, and coordinator for the M.L.K. Statue committee.

As part of Pastor Waters continued outreach, he regularly mentor college students from Paine College and Augusta State University and young preachers in Augusta. He is founder of the Young Black Preachers Fellowship, an online group which serves as a support and mentoring group to over 300 young black preachers across America.

As the fourth of five children, Pastor Waters is a native of Calhoun, Georgia. He is an honor graduate of Morehouse College.   He earned a Master of Divinity from Morehouse School of Religion at the Interdenominational Theological Center. He has also taken two years of graduate courses at the University of West Georgia in Business Administration and Professional Counseling and completed Doctorate level courses at Columbia Theological Seminary, and Liberty University.

On July 5, 2009 Pastor Waters relocated to Augusta, Georgia to Pastor the Historic Thankful Baptist Church.  During his tenure, the church has added a children’s church ministry, a Wednesday Noon Prayer meeting, hired three new musicians, added 2 new deacons, and partnered with the H.E.E.L. non-profit which prepares meals for 400 students each day during the school year. The church has added property, improved its facilities, constructed a commercial elevator, added two new lobbies, and handicap accessible restrooms.
Most significantly, many souls have been saved, youth and adults baptized, new members added to our congregation and former members reactivated their membership.

Pastor Waters is a highly sought out evangelist, a lecturer for the Walker Baptist Association, and Preacher for the New Era Missionary Baptist Convention’s annual conference. He also volunteers to speak at local colleges, public schools, and community groups. 2017 he became a contributing writer for the REH Sermon Sharing Online website.

He is married to his college sweetheart, the former Angel Faith Stembridge, a Spelman College graduate and has one son, Christian Jeremiah Waters.  In his free time, you can find him, working out at the YMCA or spending time with his family.  He loves the Lord, and loves the Historic Thankful Baptist Church Family! He often says, “the Future is Bright at Thankful!”
